How to Attract Stag Beetles to Your Garden Space in Surrey & Hampshire

Stag beetles are one of the UK’s most fascinating and endangered insects, and if you’re lucky enough to spot one in your garden space, it’s a sign of a healthy ecosystem. At The Garden Alchemist, we encourage homeowners across Surrey and Hampshire to support local wildlife as part of their garden design.

These incredible insects typically appear between late May and early June, and with a few simple changes, your garden space can become the perfect habitat for them.

  1. Build a Log Pyramid (Stumpery)

One of the most effective ways to attract stag beetles is by creating a log pyramid, also known as a stumpery. This involves burying hardwood logs vertically into the ground, around 50cm deep, in a quiet and partially shaded area.

Oak, beech, ash, and fruit tree logs work best. These logs provide a long-term food source for larvae, which can live underground for several years.

  1. Leave Old Tree Stumps in Place

If you have an old tree stump in your garden space, resist the urge to remove it. Decaying wood is essential for stag beetle larvae, and stumps provide a natural, long-lasting habitat.

  1. Create Leaf and Log Piles

A simple pile of leaves, wood chips, and logs in a shaded corner can make a huge difference. These areas retain moisture and create the ideal environment for beetles to lay their eggs.

  1. Avoid Over-Tidying Your Garden Space

While it’s tempting to keep everything neat, a wildlife-friendly garden space benefits from a little wildness. Leaving areas of decaying wood and foliage supports not only stag beetles but a wide range of beneficial insects.

  1. Install a “Beetle-gium”

If space is limited, you can still help. A “Beetle-gium” is a simple solution — bury a container with drainage holes, filled with rotting wood and soil. It acts as a compact breeding site within your garden space.

  1. Make Water Features Safe

If you have a pond, make sure it has a safe exit route. Adding stones or wood allows beetles to climb out if they fall in, preventing unnecessary loss.
